Argumentix
Tarantula Downpour 7inch
(Trash Skull Records & Tapes)

Argumentix is an outlet for Portland sound artist James Squeaky, who creates a sung-spoken verbal holocaust reminiscent of that breed of '80s trailblazers in the sound collage/spoken word department, a la Negativland or Steve Fisk's work with the late Steven Jesse Bernstein. The two selections offered here are uncompromisingly bleak and barely restrained; Tarantula Downpour Glass of Wine for Dinner provides cold comfort, an apocalyptic vision, and crashing tumbles of harsh percussion and general clatter as its sole backing track, while the slower, elegiac Lend Me a Blanket I Want to Dream About You mourns a dead mother over the sound of piano and ocean waves, vacillating between Jandek and post-Bebe Buell-breakup Todd Rundgren. Ideas here still seem to need some fleshing out, but if all Squeaky wanted to do was convey internal turmoil and heartache, he certainly succeeds here; with more development across futurer releases, and the nascent wave of juvenile experimentation gives way to its pop ballad heart hiding beneath, he'll be in the right place at the right time. Worth checking out on those dark nights of the soul. Edition of 500 (300 come with a DVD-R featuring eight videos made by Squeaky).

Adam Fisher (Smokable Birth Control Blog)

I had never really heard anything by Argumentix before this release, which I now see was my mistake. On this, his first vinyl release, James Squeaky of Argumentix manages to blend many sounds and styles together without coming off scattershot. On the first track “Tarantula Downpour”, the listener is treated to the sound of dubbed out noise clatter topped off with Squeaky’s foreboding vocals. The B Side features much more melancholy vocals at times reminiscent of Ian Curtis of Joy Division, accompanied only by piano and what sounds like waves of static in the background. The DVDR included with the record features 8 music videos animated by Squeaky. The visuals range from the director himself, his cats, action figures, and a variety of impressive color manipulation. The all around great production quality of the package itself (70 gram vinyl, great artwork) also leads to a great overall experience.

DJ Rick (Art For Spastics/KDVS Radio)

For a first record on a new label, this is a really really well-done record! Beautiful package, no corners cut on quality, excellent fidelity...and you can tell this person's a record freak 'cos the first release has a catalog number (TS-01).

"Lend Me Your Blanket" is Argumentix' best solo moment on any format so far...I didn't know about James' mom...no wonder that song's so heart-wrenching. I've seen him sing it in live performance three times, and each time, everyone in the audience is uncomfortable, and yet totally captivated.

In ten years when the DIY-CEO of Trash Skull is probably specializing in making legends outta forgotten no-name pioneers of moan-wave or some as yet unnamed genre, he can still look back on his first ever record and feel good about it, because it shows that he cared enough about the music to give it an effort that would make an enduring impression. It looks great, sounds great, and even feels great in your hand.

This is a sharp contrast with most of the young people making DIY music in SoCal right now.

Guys...musically, you are all either outstanding or even verging on something really tremendous. You deserve to give this kinda effort as evidenced by Trash Skull when you make your bands' records and CDs.

Certainly, Trash Skull spent a lot more money on this record to ensure its high quality, but just to look at it, I'd bet that it's a sureshot future collectible that he and Argumentix will be proud of in decades to come, and even if it takes two years to sell them, the extra cost incurred will be worth it in that respect.

This Argumentix EP doesn't set a minimum standard or even raise the standard. Rather, it excels a work of art and an example of a higher standard.
